2.  DOES MY CHILD NEED A PHYSICAL TO PRACTICE WITH THE TEAM?

All student-athletes must complete the Hawai'i State DOE Physical Examination Form for Athletes, which is valid for one calendar year. All Physical Examination Forms must be completed and in the possession of the Athletic Coordinator in order to actively participate in any athletic activity, including practices, pre-season work-outs, or try-outs.

To participate in athletics, student-athletes must have (1) at least a 2.0 overall grade point average and (2) receive passing grades in courses required for graduation. Students in grades 9-12 or a student, who becomes nineteen on or after September 1 of any given year, are age-eligible for sports offered at the public high schools. Upon entry to the ninth grade, students shall have only four consecutive years of participation eligibility, regardless of a break in school attendance.

JV sports are open to Freshmen and Sophomores. Once a student is a Junior, they are only eligible for sports at the Varsity level.

7.  ARE VARSITY SPORTS OPEN TO ANY GRADE LEVEL?

Varsity sports are open to all grade levels, pending that athletes meet the Varsity expectations & requirements.

8.  MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN ATHLETICS AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL. IS THERE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS PROCESS?

To get started on this process, please visit the PowerPoint presentation located in the NCAA/NAIA section. Also, be sure to visit the NCAA eligibility center.

9.  MY CHILD IS CURRENTLY ON ACADEMIC REVIEW STATUS(ARS). HOW LONG IS THE REVIEW STATUS PERIOD AND CAN HE/SHE PARTICIPATE AT ALL?

The Academic Review Status (ARS) period is for the duration of one week at Kihei Charter School.  The student-athlete may participate in practices during this period but is not eligible for competition during this time.

10.  WHAT IS EXPECTED OF MY SON OR DAUGHTER, IF HE OR SHE JOINS A SPORTS TEAM?

Each student-athlete who joins a sports team is expected to demonstrate a certain level of commitment by attending all practices scheduled by the team's coach. The level of commitment for each sport is defined by the coach and may vary. If a student-athlete is absent without a legal excuse, the day before a game, he or she is not permitted to play in the game. Mars Area School District participates in "competitive" WPIAL sports; therefore all student-athletes are expected to participate to the fullest of their abilities.

11.  I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY CHILD’S COACH, BUT I FEAR THAT A CONVERSATION WITH THE COACH WILL LEAD TO RETALIATION AND RESENTMENT.  WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Your concerns regarding retaliation should not enter your mind.  Of course, much will depend on your manner of inquiry.  Like most people, coaches will get defensive when attacked so the best method is to schedule a face-to-face meeting with the coach and include your child at the meeting.  Make sure you are seeking answers to questions that will ultimately enhance your child’s sports experience and what you as a parent can do to assist in that effort.  If you are not satisfied with the results of this meeting, your next step would be to schedule a meeting with the Athletic Coordinator.

12.  I AM UPSET WITH THE COACH OF MY CHILD'S TEAM.  HOW SHOULD I PROCEED?

I ask all parents to wait 24 hours before scheduling a meeting with the coach.  Please do not confront a coach at practice or at a contest, especially when athletes and parents are in the area.  If after your meeting you are not satisfied with the results, you should then set up a meeting with the athletic coordinator.

13.  ON WHICH DAYS OF THE WEEK ARE PRACTICES AND CONTESTS HELD?

The answer depends on the sport.  Most teams will practice Monday - Friday and have contests on Saturdays.  Each sport is a little different.  Your coach will be able to clarify this for you.
